More Than Just an Engineer – Developing Your Soft Skills

Posted on by David

As globalization changes the landscape of manufacturing, engineers are augmenting their skillsets to meet the responsibilities to the bottom line. Traditionally, engineers put a greater importance on technical skills like proficiency in the latest software over the opportunity to strengthen essential soft skills like inter-personal communication.  Today, engineers are facing a world where there is no distinct line between business and engineering.  It’s time to develop your presentation skills, embrace change, network socially, and think critically about your own areas of improvement to become a leader.  This month’s blog entry is all about the soft skills you’ll need when you consider your future with CORE.

The current US engineering workforce has to work smarter as off-shoring continues to be a tempting option to keep R&D costs in line. Engineers are increasingly asked to step outside their traditional roles and interact with the client directly on a day to day basis.  In a recent interview with Dave Hempe, Mechanical Engineer at Emteq, he explains the need for specific types of interpersonal skills necessary to work in the aerospace industry.

“Today’s engineer interacts with the customer more than ever before, so it’s crucial to be flexible when it comes to the notion of traditional engineering roles. At Emteq, our engineers are outgoing, embrace technology, and recognize the value of a sales or financial background. We’re always looking for the engineer that can not only design, but present ideas directly to the customer and understand all aspects of a project. Language skills are also becoming an important part of an engineer’s arsenal as we see the emergence of Latin American markets.”

Here at CORE, we’re always looking for engineers with passion and drive.  Not only do our engineers have the technical qualifications to fills positions from Project Coordinators to Automation Engineers , but they also have a passion for what they do, and it shows in their work. Michelle Greiner, Senior HR Generalist at JW Speaker,  is looking for just that type of enthusiasm.  She had this to say about the kind of Engineer that’s going to succeed in today’s market place.

“All of our staff, regardless of title, has a passion for what they do.  Our Engineers are lifelong learners that are proud to put their name on a product. If you’re passionate about what you do, that comes across in your communication with your internal team and the external customer.  Our engineers are not your typical project managers as they handle cross-functional projects at perhaps double the workload of a traditional engineer. Proficiency in project management and communication skills is a must.”
